Chinese woodcut: Shingles and other itchy rashes

Woodcut from the anonymous medical text Zhenzang waike tu (Illustrated Bedside Book of External Medicine), published in 1767 (32nd year of the Qianlong reign period of the Qing dynasty). The illustration shows the disease location for huoyun (deadly burning), chanyao (waist girdle, shingles), shuiliu magen (floating hemproot?), jiexuan (scabies, mange). Chanyao (waist girdle), also known as chanyao huodan (waist encircling red fire) is equivalent to herpes zoster. Jiexuan, or jiechuang refers to scabies. Huoyun refers to conditions, possibly including urticaria, which begin with reddening of the skin, developing into a raised, spreading rash. Shuiliu magen has not been identified.
