About this work

Description

Left foreground, a tree (willow?) acting as repoussoir. In the left background, a horseman crosses an old stone bridge over the river, proceeding towards a building with a pitched roof and a small vestibule or apse. Right, the herdsman stands on an eminence from which he can see his flock. In the same year (1782), Jukes's aquatints illustrating the Rev. W. Gilpin, 'Observations on the River Wye and several parts of South Wales' were published: could this be an unused sketch for that work? The published selection was restricted to scenes illustrating Gilpin's theory of the picturesque
