About this work

Description

The second in a 3-part series in which Robert Winston meets doctors working at the cutting edge of medicine in new and innovative ways. This part looks at the science of stem cells and their potential to cure a whole range of diseases. However there is a lot of hype surrounding the use of stem cells and unethical clinics are cashing in on this. Yvette McGeehan's son Dominic fell into a vegetative state following meningitis. She and her husband were drawn to trying stem cell therapy on Dominic and they travelled around the world and spent over £180 000 on treatments which in the end probably contributed to Dominic's death rather than offered him any hope of a cure. Winston then looks at how stem cells are being used to repair damaged hearts; he meets Alec Adamson who travels to Germany for stem cell therapy and David who takes part in a stem cell treatment trial - both treatments involve the men having their own stem cells injected into damaged areas of their hearts. Winston revisits them 6 weeks later and although Alec claims to feel better, a heart scan doesn't show any improvement.
