    REPOET OF THE MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT, Mr. Chairman, My Lords, and Gentlemen : There remained in the Asylum, December 31, 1869, . Admitted during 1870, . Males. Females. Total. [ 206 255 461 56 39 95 Discharged, Died, 262 294 556 30 53 . 39 19 58 200 245 445 Of whom 20 Males and 21 Females are Private Patients. The total number of Patients under treatment during the year has been 556; the lowest resident at one time 445, the highest 469, and the average 460. The admissions during the year have not been so numerous by 18 as those of the preceding year: of those admitted, 32 were from the first deemed to be incurable, either from long continuance of the disease, advanced age, or the existence of serious organic disease ; in 37 cases only was any exciting cause assigned for the attack; of these, 23 were attributed to physical, and 14 to moral influences. In 17 cases, hereditary predisposition to insanity was stated to have existed, and 27 had suffered previous attacks. Thirty-nine men and 19 women have died. The mortality for the year has been at the rate of 10’43 per cent, on the total number of Patients treated, and is nearly 4 per cent, above that of last year. It is satisfactory to be able to report that this increased rate of mor¬ tality has not been the result of any epidemic, but is to be attribu¬ ted to the large number of deaths that have taken place among
