About this work

Description

The lettering "Sédan 2 Décembre" refers to the beginning and end of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte's reign. "2 Décembre" refers firstly to 2 December 1851, when as President of the Second Republic he seized dictatorial power in a coup; and secondly to 2 December 1852, when, as Napoleon III, he assumed the role of Emperor of the Second Empire. "Sédan" refers to the end of his political career in 1870, when he was captured by the Prussians at the battle of Sédan, and over 17,000 French soldiers were killed
