These gate piers and the globes they carry are described in John Cooke and John Maule, An historical account of the Royal Hospital for seamen at Greenwich, London, 1789, pp 40-41. The mathematical calculations for the globes were carried out by Richard Oliver: "formerly mathematical master at the academy at Greenwich"
A reference to the author of the work may be found in Streatfeild, ed. Drake, A new history of Blackheath hundred, 1870, p.68 (notes): "The globes over the piers of the western gates were made by Edw. Man in 1752, inscribed by Ric. Oliver, mathematical master of the school in 1750... "

Creator/production credits

Thomas Ripley was Surveyor to the Hospital from 1729 to 1758. No mention is made of his authorship of the design for these porters' lodges and gate piers in H. M. Colvin, A biographical dictionary of British architects, New Haven and London, 1995, but no other designer is credited with them
