Description

This rite was performed in Holland, where the design of the plate representig this ceremony was drawn from life

When the coffin is lowered into the grave, particular care is taken to place it at some distance from any other coffin, and as soon as it is lodged, everyone covers it with earth, either with a spade, or with their hands, as represented in this plate
