About this work

Description

A film showing a successful operation to create an artificial vagina in a young woman aged 19. The surgical area is seen and the lack of vaginal space illustrated. A skin graft on the thigh is performed and the skin is draped over a mould (in an article by Read, this is described as being made of balsa wood, although this does not appear to be the material used for the mould here). The mould is inserted into the body and sutured. The patient is shown post-operatively - a glass phallus is inserted in the vagina to illustrate that a cavity of sufficient size has been created. This is followed by a short sequence of colour footage depicting the same procedure.

Notes

The film in the can marked 'Do Not Project Original Film' appears to be slighly shrunk and the intertitles are not as clear as in the other copy. Both copies are in reasonable condition.
Charles Read published an article about this operation (most with McIndoe) in the Journal of the Natlional Medical Assocation. 1969 November; 61(6): 501–503. The two anonymous patients aged 19 at the time of the procedure were operated on in 1938 and 1941.
