Note: Alison was a professor at Edinburgh University for over 36 years and President of the Edinburgh College of Physicians between 1836 and 1838. His work on the relationship between poverty and ill health was of profound social importance. The above study, a classic of its kind, was based on his long experience of hospital and dispensary work, and the social conditions he encountered
