About this work

Description

From Anthony Norden and Michela Wrong's Guide to the Catalogue: "Complementing the almost complete collection of print copies of Wrong's own work in '1' , this red file contains a remarkably detailed self-assessment, focussing on scientific citations of Wrong's work. There is a multi-page sellotaped 'banner' documenting the number of citations of most of his work. Each citation is counted meticulously by hand. I wonder whether this was done through manual review of the print editions of 'Current Contents' (see Web for details of this publication, originally from the 'Institute of Scientific Information'.

Wrong took citations sufficiently seriously to calculate the 'Hirsch Index', 'h' for his own publications. Briefly, the higher 'h', the more valuable are an author's citations. 'h' attempts to adjust for total number of papers and total number of citations (this is itself a complex field!). Wrong annotated his copy of the Hirsch paper 'my h is 39 after 50 years'. This file, whose contents were kept entirely private, has the feel of a personal indulgence or hobby. An inveterate insomniac, Wrong often whiled away the early hours playing Sudoku and patience, meticulously grading favourite J.S. Bach cantatas, and - it seems - calculating his own "h" index."
