    elapfed, fince the conduct of lying-in women has been intruded to the care of men cf fcience, fo much has been already done, efpecially when we re- flect that on the one hand the progrefs of the art has been obftructed by the delicacy of women, and on the other oppofed by prejudices fuggefted by intereft, and artfully propagated by many practi- tioners in the other branches of medicine. But although parturition in its moft natural flate be not expofed to much danger, yet luxury and an unnatural mode of life have Subjected wo- men to difficulties in labor, and difeafes confequent to it of fuch importance, that, notwithstanding all the opposition which has been with fuch violence exerted, women have at length facrificed all con- siderations of falfe delicacy to the more weighty one of felf-prefervation.
