About this work

Description

Formation of the chick parietal and occipital bones at embryonic day 16. They are stained with alcian blue and alizarin red to show cartilage (blue) and bone (red) development. New bone is laid down at the edges of the bony area and extends outwards. Consequently the margins of the bones are less dense than the central regions.
