    Bploens of rabbits in wkick tbey kad produced malarious fevers artificially, found red globules, at first nickel-coloured and pre- servine tkeir discoid skape, afterwards of a black colour, and inclosed singly or in groups in tke wkite cells, witk tke destruction of whick tkey became free and reduced into masses. Tiiey conclude tkat tke conversion of kiemoglobin into black pigment takes place in thè red globules while tkey yet retain tkeir semi-iluid consistence. Tommasi-Crudeli* also kolds tkat tkis degeneration of red globules occurs tkroughout tke wkole vascular System, and chiefly in tke vessels of tke spleen and bone marrow. He says tkat in melanaemia takes place a necrobiosis of red globules, produced by a specific degenerativo atropky of their protoplasm. Afanassiewf made bis okservations on tke sick amongst thè troops in tke last Russo-Turkish war. He describes tke affections of thè spleen, kidneys, liver, and brain in those dead from malaria. His description is in accord with other observers as regards tke spleen, liver, and kidneys. In tke brain lie found distinct cloudi- ness of tke protoplasm of thè nervo cells, witk enlargement of tke pericellular spaces ; tke capillary walls sometimes granular ; tke endothelium swollen ; pigment granules in thè lumen of thè vessels, in thè endothelial cells, in tke perivascular areas. He describes such granules wken tkey are isolated, and not formed into masses, as perfectly round, of equal size, and having a skining brown centre. He doubts tkeir origin from tho colouring matter of thè blood ; suggests tkat tkey may kave anotker origin ; finds tkat tkey kave an analogy witk tke cromi- genous micrococci of Colm, and suspects their parasitic nature. Witk thè kistory of melanaemia are connected some recent researches of Laveran and Richard. LaveranJ kolds that tke pigmentcd elements dcscribed in part by Ivelsch, and different from melaniferous wkite cells, represent parasitic elements. He describes three forms of thcse pigmented elements, wkick he kolds to be of parasitic nature, lst.
