Since the gums, when healthy, give bcautv and solidity to the denture, and since their opposite condition not only undermines the permanency of the teeth, but [)ollutes the whole mouth, they must participate in all the care bestowed on those organs. Tooth pow- der, besides cleansing and beautifying the denture, should always possess some tonic property for the gums. The constant use of much spirituous and stimulant lotion, cannot be good either for the gums or teeth. The conservative means are limited, when the gums are tumid, livid, anil apt to bleed, to stimulating them in the morning \viih an aromatic tincture, such as kino, catechu, bark, myrrh ; and to the application of a mild metallic astringent, such as solution of sulphate of zinc, when their dehility and tenderness is purely local. If, on the contrary, their rela.\- ation depend on a general cause, we must have recourse to internal treatment. They
