    watering place,—according to the character, the state, and the complication of the illness; as suitable to the individuality, the season, and temperature of the air. I beg my medical brethren, who will confide patients to my care, to tell me all about their usual habit and diet, their occupation, of the character and duration of their present illness, as well, as of former complaints, of their family constitution, etc. Of Chronic Catarrhal Affections.—The beginning is always hyperaemia of the mucous membrane, which becomes thicker, swelled, dark brown, red or grey; there are more or less varicous blood-vessels visible; the membrane is more solid and compact, difficult to tear; the surface is uneven, papillous or folliculous; the membrane is covered with a thick muddy white, grey or green mucous matter; the chronic catarrh leads either to infiltration in the submucous cellular texture and hypertrophia, or to atrophia, blennorhoea and gathering; by hypertrophia the mucous membrane is either pale or red, brown, grey, dark blue, the secretion is increased, glutinous, vitreous; atrophia appears, when the infiltrated mass of the submucous cellular texture produces a callous condensation of the mucous membrane. Consequences of chronic catarrhal affections are phthisis eatarrhalis, eaulifiower-like excrescences, polypes, diverticles, dilatation, stenosis, and sometimes occlusion of the caves and canals, perforations. The more important the affected organ is, the more disadvantageous is the retroaction on the blood, and the sustentation of the whole organism. We see, some¬ times, one or the other sense disturbed. Our springs further expectoration, relieve dyspnoe, increase oxidation and diuresis, remove swelling, infiltration, and hyper¬ trophia of the mucous membrane and submucous cellular texture, with their above-named consequences, and relieve the stagnation
