    'but, owing to the extended woods and shady promenades close to the town—where the trees and plants of all kinds absorb carbonic acid, and give out oxygen—we have always a pure and healthy air. In July and August Ems is always full of invalids of all nations; therefore, I advise English visitors to choose the cooler and less crowded months of May, June, and September. I beg medical men, who send patients to Ems, to take notice of these remarks. HEALING POWERS. The springs of Ems, according to their chemical analysis, belong to the warm alkaline, and muriatic carbonic mineral waters, and contain as solid efficacious ingredients, chiefly bicarbonate of soda, chloride of sodium, and bicarbonate of lime. Amongst the volatile parts, carbonic acid prevails, with its vivifying and animating power. There is but very little iron in the Ems waters, but it is just enough to prevent alkaline cachexia, which we see from abuse of alkaline water without iron. The symptoms of this complaint are weakness of mind and body, dark colour of the skin, soft and easily bleeding gums, want of appetite, sometimes diarrhoea. The healing power of the Ems waters is founded on the i combined physiological, chemical, and mechanical effect of their i single ingredients, of which I will speak now. 1. Bicarbonate of Soda.—“It removes acidity, increases the oxidation of the blood, it keeps fibrin and albumen fluid, furthers the change of albumen into protein, it sustains the bile-producing process, uniting itself with glycochol and taurochol acid, setting carbonic acid free.”—Liebig, Ludwig, Nasse, Ererichs. Indication: acidity, heartburning, cardialgia, chronic catarrh, concrements, gout, diabetes—mellitus, morbus—Lrightii.
