Biographical note

Scope was founded in 1952 as the National Spastics Society with the aim of campaigning for disabled children to have equal rights to education. It changed its name to Scope in 1994.Following this the first school set-up by the National Spastics Society was Craig y Parc in Cardiff in 1955. Over the years the National Spastics Society, whose name changed to Scope in 1994, has worked on supporting disabled people to find jobs, founding special schools and further education colleges for disabled students, providing a helpline to support disabled people and their families and challenging public attitudes to disability. Scope celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2002.

Acc 2218 (24 items, donated 2015): 16 original illustrations from the In the Picture Campaign created by children's book illustrators including Quentin Blake. Two Scope campaign posters 'Who does he think he is – Damon Hill?' and 'The Sixth Spice Girl? Dream on', 1996. 'Time to Get Equal' campaign, pledge card and three Time to Get Equal Campaign posters, 2004. Work Kids campaign poster and Christmas card entry on the theme of disability from the Disability Now Christmas Card competition.

Acc 2221 (1 box, donated 2015): Spastics News, March 1968- September 1970 and September 1972-December 1974.

Acc 2341 (2 boxes, donated 2017): 3 ringbinders of photographs from fundraising events for "Save Our Stars" involving celebrities; slides and various loose papers.

Acc 2667 (donated 2022): Born-digital organisational records of Scope. Comprises: Word-processed press releases, c. 1999-2022; 'Disability Now' podcast recordings (MP3) and word-processed transcripts (MS Word), 2012-2016; Annual Reviews 2014-2021 (PDF); Publications, 2015-2022 (PDF and MS Word).

Acc 2734 (one folder; 1 volume, donated Jan 2024: Bradford and District Scope records, including Bradford and District Spastics Society AGM minutes 1989, 1993-1994, 1997-1999; Governance and charity documents including Land Registry, various editions of Memorandum and Articles of Association for Bradfrod and District and 1953 Memorandum and Articles of Association for the Spastics Society and related documents; "register of members, etc" volume.
