    8 Population and Inhabited Houses in 1899.—The population of the parish, estimated to the middle of the year, was 172,400. It comprised, approximately, 68,110 males, and 104,290 females: excess of females 36,180. In the Town sub district (estimated population 123,900) the males numbered about 51,468; the females 72,432: excess of females 20,964. In the Brompton sub-district (estimated population 48,500) there were about 16,642 males, and 31,858 females: excess of females 15,216. This population was in occupation of about 22,750 houses, equal to 7.58 persons to a house on an average. In the poorer and most densely populated parts of the parish the number of persons to a house is greatly in excess of the average.
