About this work

Description

A team of forensic scientists investigate the lives of the crusaders, following the excavation of a number of skeletons found of crusaders along the Israel / Jordan border who probably died during the first Crusade, the Battle of Jacob's Ford in 1179. The remains of some of some of the 80 Crusader Knights and 750 foot soldiers have been analysed and a few case studies featured which use a combination of dramatic reconstruction and forensic science to illustrate them. Forensic anthropologist, Mick Wysocki, specialises in battle wounds. He analyses the bones of a Knight Templar who suffered injuries to the face, lost an arm and had an arrow in his neck. Despite this, the wound that probably killed him was a blow to the head. Another featured skeleton is thought to be that of a stone mason, an unarmed craftsman. Some men appear to have barricaded themselves in as they began to lose the battle - one of these was a high ranking Knight Templar who was attacked and beheaded. His story is pieced together. It also appears that the Commander of the Templars may have rode his horse into flames, committing suicide.
