Description

On the left, a man stripped naked begs in front of a victorious soldier. In the centre, satyrs climb up to the statue. To the right an old satyr sits before piles of money, while another next to him kneels and holds a smoking censer

1. La passion des richesses. Exprimée dans un esprit satyrique par des satyres avares. Gillot pinxit. Audran ex. .... Lettering continues: "Quelle divinité triomphe dans ce lieu?/ Mortels, c'est vôtre unique dieu:/ Prosternez vous: c'est le dieu des richesses./ Voulez vous, de plein droit, meriter ses largesses?// N'aiez pour la vertu qu'un insolent mépris:/ Joignez dans vos complots le crune à l'artifice:/ Soiez cruels, sans foy, sans honneur, sans justice:/ Mon or, vous dit Plutus, ne s'obtient qu'a ce prix"

One of a set of four engravings by Audran after red chalk drawings by Gillot, called Les passions de l'homme exprimées par les satyres. The present engraving and La passion de la guerre are after drawings offered for sale at Sotheby's, London, 5 July 2000, lots 54 and 55. The other two, La passion du jeu (this catalogue no. 26876i) and La passion de lamour (this catalogue no. 26874i) are after drawings in the British Museum (1907-11-18-35 and 36)
