    From the Rev. Robert Buchanan, of the Tron Church Mr. Hugh Miller, Surgeon, has been a member of my Congregation for nearly five years. On joining it he pro- duced a highly satisfactory Certificate of christian character and conduct from the Minister with whose Congregation he was previously connected. Since that time he has taught with great kindness and assiduity one of my Parish Sabbath Schools; and has uniformly conducted himself as became his christian profession. He is now a Candidate for the situa- tion of Surgeon to the Town's Hospital, which, I understand, will be vacant in August next. It does not, of course, be- ■come me to offer any opinion as to his strictly professional •qualifications for the office in question, but I can have no doubt, from the Medical Certificates in his favour which I have seen, and from the experience he must have had, both in his general practice, and in the office he now holds as a District Surgeon, that he is well fitted for its duties. And, on the ground of my own personal knowledge, I can safely testify that he possesses that general intelligence and activity, those obliging dispositions and christian principles, which will both incline and enable him to be faithful and efficient in the important situation after which he aspires.
