About this work

Description

Inspired by the beautiful drawings of neurons by Santiago Ramón y Cajal, and Jackson Pollock's action painting, 'Pollocking Cajal' addresses a fundamental principle of cortical organisation through the random yet guided creation of a neuronal network. The placement of the neurons that populate the neocortex can be perceived as a combination of guidance mechanisms and a certain randomness which is the underlying technique of the presented work: Color blobs are thrown to the canvas, and the intention of this action in combination with the thickness and weight of the painting make emerge neuron-like morphologies and a diversity of connectivity patterns.
