    CONTENTS. Sec. I. Ancient authors naturally silent on the subject: also all writers down to 1763. Sec. II. Avenbrugger, in 1763, published his observations on Percussion : Corvisart also practised it. Sec. III. Laennec practised immediate auscultation, and pub- lished a Thesis on it in 1815 : in 1816, accident led to introduction of mediate auscultation : improved his instrument. Sec. IV. Sketch of later improvements in the instrument. Sec. V.
