About this work

Description

"Aghh! Zine was born in our kitchen between cooking dinners, eating them and drinking tea. After many days spent sharing our experiences and having discussions on how as women, we didn't feel completely free to show our body hair and how as a society we are simply not there yet. Even though more people are talking and feeling empowered through their body hair, we both didn't feel represented in mainstream media; something that has always been dominated by unreachable beauty standards. Why is my body hair a fetish? Why is my body hair a statement? Why do I have to fit into someone else's idea of beauty? If we are the ones who create our realities, why are we so rigid in the way we imagine our (collective) self? We had a light-bulb moment. Why didn't we create a publication where we could show ourselves and others celebrating our body hair freely? Something we would like to see in magazines; something positive and beautiful. It has taken one year to progress from talking to actually making it. Now we're back in the same kitchen and we still can't believe that it is actually happening. The submissions in our first issue are from people who identify as women and non-binary; because historically these groups have been more negatively impacted by this beauty standard. What we love is the communal catharsis that this issue represents."--From page 3.
