About this work

Description

An artwork by Tuberculosis Patient 17 which shows flowers in a vase on a bedside table. Rita Simon praised the tactile quality of the painting and said: "These images have a special realism."

Part of the description of this artwork and the quote are taken from notes made during conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997.

The title has been taken from wording written on the verso of the artwork by Rita Simon.

On the verso of the artwork, Rita Simon has named the hospital that the patient was in, the patient's name (which has been scribbled out in pencil), the title of the artwork and the words, "this is his first painting."

Rita Simon classified this artwork as Traditional Massive.
