Biographical note

The author was professor of anatomy at University College, London from 1832 to 1850. He was elected F.R.S. in 1844, and was President of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1868 [see the Dictionary of National Biography]. Alexander Halley obtained his M.D. at Edinburgh in 1844, and was a surgeon in London.
