    last the pure milk is given. This should be done, of course, with due caution, and if it is found that the digestion of the child will not bear the increase, the old mixture, whatever it may have been, which has previously suited, should be given again, and the attempt to strengthen the food not made for a few weeks or a month or two, as the case may be. Children under two years of age are generally best fed upon milk and milk foods, and the less this is departed from, as a rule, the better. Under this age they should never be taken to the table, for it only gives the child the fancy for articles of diet which, if it never saw, it would not want. It is well to give young infants nothing but their regular food, and not to give pieces of cake or candy, or anything else of the kind, for the pleasure of seeing them enjoy it. If this rule is observed, parents save themselves a great deal of annoyance in their children's crying for what they cannot have. In the great majority of cases children have not much desire for animal food of any sort until after the first dentition is over, unless the craving is fos- tered in them by their being given one thing and another to eat, and thus there is created what is almost an unnatural appetite. If a child is well and thrives, taking plenty of milk, no great effort should be made to induce it to take other articles of diet until after the processes of the first dentition are completed.
