About this work

Description

Lavater comments: "This person seems to regard with a look of compassion an object which excites sorrow; a sublime character, full of energy and strength of judgement". However, Lavater goes on to argue against "that ideal beauty, that great manner, that high style", in favour of an art influenced by nature. But even so, he says that it is right to overlook neglect of nature in the case of certain geniuses (including Raphael)
