About this work

Description

This documentary looks at the negative side-effects of major tranquilisers, designed in the 1950s to control the extreme symptoms of schizophrenia. These drugs are commonly used in the UK to treat difficult behaviour in children with mental disabilities while in the US their use is strictly controlled because of the devastating side effects. We visit Beechtree school where no children are given anti-psychotic medication and are responding instead to methods of teaching communication and behaviour skills.
