After a painting in the opposite direction painted for Claude's patron Cardinal Massimi, which passed to England and, on the evidence of this print, was in the collection of Humphrey Edwin by 1746: he was the son of Sir Humphrey Edwin, Lord Mayor of London in 1697-1698 and a City of London merchant. It was acquired ca. 1749-1750 by Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester, and then remained by descent at Holkham Hall, Norfolk (Cecchi, loc. cit.), hung with other paintings by Claude in the Landscape Room
