    brane, or in the tympanal cavity, the most satisfactory results are obtained by counter-irritation. Practically, we have no other remedy in these cases, whether we use the cantharides, or iodine, or mustard, or hot water and linseed meal. In acute cases I place, with marked benefit, a horseshoe under and around the ear. In chronic inflammations (and these form the great majority of diseases of the ear), the counter-irritation may be applied to the mastoid process and carried to the back of the neck. An incision over the mastoid process, in acute inflammation of the membrana tympani, or tympanal lining, has been recommended; it acts of course as a counter-irritant, and a sufficiently r large blister would act as well. In inflammatory thickening of the mucous lining of the eustachian tube, the application of iodine and nitrate of silver to the tonsil acts as counter-irritation to the eustachian tube. THE END.
