About this work

Description

In this extended documentary, acclaimed film-maker Paul Watson presents a unique and unflinching insight into alcoholism at its worst. Based on four patients attending Dickens Ward at the Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, North Kent, Watson discusses their reasons for drinking with them and with Dr. Gray Smith-Laing, the consultant for the ward. Toni, a 26-year-old binge drinker, is unable to curb her drinking and dies very early on in the programme, while Nigel, a reformed drinker for 10 years who is suffering the effects of liver disease, also dies while waiting for a liver transplant. 29-year-old Mark returns home, as does 53-year-old Vanda. Both continue to drink. This programme makes uncomfortable viewing, but does much to illustrate the intense trap and the sense of hopelessness long-term alcoholics find themselves caught up in.
