    vagabond was not unfrequently, bad as he was, greatly abused. At one time he was!thrust into the streets, in the midst of a dark and tempestuous night, at a distance from his own miserable hum and at another he was refused a drink of water from the well, or a mouthful of food, and threatened with personal chastisement. No one claimed this poor cileature as his kinsman; he had not a solitary friend, fie was buried like a dog, and totally uncared for. The fact of his death was carried, not much less than twenty miles, by a young physician to others of his acquaintance; and arrange- ments were immediately entered upon and completed to procure the body. A pair of horses and sleigh were in readiness, the necessary implements procured, and at ten o’clock, when all was quiet, and all fear of being recognized on the road prerented by the lateness of the hour, these three young doctors started on their errand. The wind having blown from a southerly direction for some hours it soon commenced raining ; and the snow being thin upon the grot nd, the issue of their expe¬ dition began to appear sc mewhat doubtful. The rain poured—the sleigh shoes grated harshly upon the gravel—the night was extremely dark; and the faster the rain fell and the snovr melted, the more was their speed increased as far is was consistent with safety over a bad road, with which they were but little ac¬ quainted. Thus they contended with adverse circum¬ stances till they had accomplished nearly the whole distance; and, now, oil looking at what was before them—considering the (time necessary to accomplish their work, and to make the journey home over a road, now almost cleared of /snow, it was found impossible to proceed further.
