Notes

More material relating to the Graves Medical Audiovisual Library is in the Wellcome Library reference SA/GMR.
One of several films created as a result of the research work carried out by F. T. (Frederick Thomas) Graves between 1952 and 1986 at University College Hospital, Kings College Hospital and Staffordshire General Infirmary. F. T. Graves was the brother of John Graves (1923-1980) who set up the Graves Medical Audiovisual Library with his wife Valerie.
A magnetic sound track was supplied with the film material but was so severely degraded it was disposed of.
From accompanying notes: 'This provides a good display of the method of access to the vagus nerve at the point where it emerged from the chest into the abdomen. As this area is one of considerable difficulty of access, in most cases it is usually only the surgeon himself who "gets a good view". In this film the demonstration and subsequent division of both the anterior and posterior branches of the vagus nerve are seen. If this film is edited and used to make a Teaching film it would probably be advisable to add to it a film demonstrating a pyloroplasty if that which is provided here is not suitable or adequate.'
