About this work

Description

The iron and stone oven was designed by James Story and was used for baking bread on William Parry's expedition to the Arctic in 1819-1820. The machine designed by Benjamin Rider was designed to cut circular pieces of cardboard or leather to go inside the crown of the hat to strengthen it, called tips. Previously the tips were cut by hand with a pair of scissors
