About this work
Description
Shows the "heliotherapeutic" treatment of child and adolescent tuberculosis patients by whole-body and chest exposure to ultra-violet Finsen lamps and radiant heat machines, and the controlled use of ultra-violet light to treat facial and buccal cavity lesions in young adults. Of great interest to historians of twentieth centry medicine, as the Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital was one of the first British hospitals to introduce Finsen lamp treatment shortly after its foundation in 1908, and one of the last to abandon it after 1945. "Heliotherapy" was especially favoured by Dr. (later Sir) Henry Gauvain, first medical superintendent of the Treloar Hospital for Crippled Children, and this film shows the treatment in use at the height of its popularity in Britain. A fascinating visual record of "high-tech" medicine 1920s style, and more particularly of a "modern" medical specialty - medical electrics - which has now all but disappeared.
