Composition related to a painting by Annibale Carracci. "Panofsky [Erwin Panofsky, Hercules am Scheidewege und andere antike Bildstoffe in der neueren Kunst, Berlin 1930] suggests (p. 129 note1) that the designer might be Maratti, referring to a passage in Bottari's 1759/60 edition of Vasari: after referring to Annibale's painting in the Palazzo Farnese, Bottari continues 'Carlo Maratta eziando espresse questo medesimo pensiero, il quale va parimente in istampa intagliato'" (British Museum online catalogue)
