    n PUBLISHEK'S NOTICE. Though the work of Sir Astley Cooper upon Hernia has been long before the public, and the importance of his contributions to this part of Surgery universally acknowledged, yet its inconvenient size, that of a very large folio, and its great cost, have almost entirely precluded the practitioners of the United States from having access to it; and were its possession desired, the wish could not now be gratified, as no complete copy of the work can at this period be purchased in London. In getting up this edition of it, it has been the desire of the Publishers to make choice of a form which while it is brought within the reach of all members of the profession, would at the same time be worthy of the fame of its distinguished author; and this aim they feel confident of having accomplished. The text is given entire, and without addition, from the second edition, issued by Mr. Key, under the eye of the author himself. And the execution of the plates will be found to compare advantageously with any of a like kind that have yet appeared in this country, while the accuracy of their reduction from the original size, and correctness of reference, has been secured by the careful attention of a person competent to the task. Philadelphia, January, 1844.
