About this work

Description

This material relates to three major phases of activity: Thompson's search for Hickman materials 1911-1912, the mounting of an exhibition and associated book in 1930, and the mounting of an exhibition at the Faculty of Anaesthetics in 1946. The bulk of the material relates to the 1930 exhibition and book, but this makes use of materials gathered or generated by Thompson whose researches of 1911 drew attention to the role of Hickman in the development of anesthesia. The 1946 exhibition also re-uses earlier materials, from 1911 and 1930. Thus the distribution of materials between files is somewhat confused, with duplication of some, and the provenance or date of production sometimes obscured. The files include correspondence with Hickman's descendants [Blanche Thompson, FH Thompson and Mrs Betteridge] who gave and loaned materials for exhibition, drafts for publications and original and copy photographs For files re the reception marking the opening of the exhibition see WA/HMM/RE/D. Many of these papers had been removed from their archival context to be held as part of the WMS collections [WMS 8966]. As there was no discernable logic to the selection of material for transfer to WMS, all the papers have now been reintegrated here , and catalogued as one body Hickman documents collected by Thompson et al. are now in the Autograph Letter Sequence of the WMS Department
