About this work

Description

Poster advertising the appearance of Herr Winkelmeier (who was 8 feet 9 inches tall) in some sort of variety show organised by Mr. E. Villiers at the London Pavilion in Piccadilly, possibly in 1885. Born on 27 April 1860 in Lengau, Austria, Winkelmeier was advertised as the tallest man who ever existed. He toured Europe, having previously "created... a sensation at the Folies Bergeres, Paris" and was introduced to Queen Victoria in June 1887. He died 2 months later on August 24th. At the head of the poster is: "London Pavilion, Piccadilly W."
