About this work

Description

For information on Eustache and his head (which appeared regularly in phrenological charts), see Wellcome Library no. 28262i. He is descriibed as "ce nègre si attaché à ses maîtres qu'il leur sauva la vie au péril de la sienne" (Journal des artistes, loc. cit, p. 361). Chauffron was an assassin who died in the Bicêtre hospital for insane people (ibid.)
