Lecture by George Hitchings, Jr. (1905-1998), given on 8th October 1985, reviewing the early history of Wellcome pharmaceutical research, his own career with the Drug Development Group after 1942, his role in the development of drugs to inhibit the rejection by hosts of transplanted organs, and later in pioneering the "rational design" of enzyme inhibitors, followed by general questions from his audience.
