Description

Woodcut illustrating the 17th century text Xu Ping waike zhengzong (Orthodox Manual of External Medicine with Commentary by Xu Dachun), from an edition published in 1860 (10th year of the Xianfeng reign period of the Qing dynasty).

Right-hand illustration:

The illustration shows the appearance and disease location of mianhua chuang (cotton sore). Also known as meihua chuang (plum blossom sore), this is a lingering condition.

Left-hand illustration:

The illustration shows the disease location for niukou feng (button wind); lianchuang (sore on the shank). Niukou feng occurs on the neck, at the place where the collar buttons up. Lianchuang is a type of ulcer that occurs on the lower leg.

Lettering

RIGHT-HAND ILLUSTRATION: Mianhua chuang (cotton sore), i.e. meihua chuang (plum blossom sore). LEFT-HAND ILLUSTRATION: Niukou feng (button wind); this is itchy and resembles ringworm.
