During the year under report, 7 Societies in Ahmedabad City and 5 in Bombay >City and suburbs were sanctioned loan to the extent of 41‘01 lakhs under the Housing programme, thus bringing a total amount of loans sanctioned to the Housing Societies to Rs. 83‘31 lakhs to 21 Societies under the scheme. Government continued to give assistance in the matter of securing suitable building sites for the Societies and building materials, iron, steel, etc., required for construction of houses. For the amelioration of backward class persons financial and other assistance is provided so as to encourage establishment of Housing Colonies for their benefit. During the year 74 Housing Societies (excluding 10 Societies formed exclusively for Halpatis) for backward classes were registered. During the year loans to the extent of Rs. 2*24 lakhs were sanctioned to 4 societies bringing to total amount of loans sanctioned to Rs. 14-50 lakhs to 22 Societies for construction of 1.140 houses for fiood victims of Ahmednagar District as per type designs approved by the Registrar, Co-operative Societies. During the year under report loans amounting to Rs. 17,12,821 were sanctioned to 4 Societies for building of houses for displaced persons. Government also sanctioned loan for housing for factory workers. 121. Mines.—There is ^only one important manganese mine at Shivarajpur in Halol Taluka of Panch Mahals District conducted by the Managing agent of Messrs. Killick Nixon and Company, Bombay. The mine was inspected by the District Health Officer, Panch Mahals. 2,800 males and 1,200 females are employed there. Attendance at creche was about 30 to 40; number of accidents 48. A full-time Medical Officer is maintained. There are 20 beds in the Hospital. Out-door attendance was 80 to 200. The District Health Officer, Thana, inspected B. B. & C. I. Railway mine at Virar. 24 labourers are employed there. First Aid Box is maintained. In cases of accidents, patients are treated by private Doctors. CHAPTER XIV Public Health Service and Administration. 122. Public Health Laboratories.—Shri J. L. Rebello, D.P.H., was in charge of the Public Health Laboratory, Poona, from 1st January to 12th August 1950, when he retired. Shri N. T. Advani, D.P.H., Assistant Dirtector of Public Health|, C.R.D., Poona, held additional charge of the post from 13th August to 12th September 1950. Shri C. M. Dighe, D.P.H., held full-time charge of the Laboratory from the 13th September 1950 to the -end of the year.
