About this work

Description

Tri-Dent dental station. Metal, glass and ceramic. Ritter Dental Manufacturing Company Inc., c. 1920. RRa0071 / Reading Room The Ritter Dental Manufacturing Company pioneered the grouping of dental operating tools within a single unit. Air, gas, water and electricity were all close to hand, along with a high-speed electric drill, a directional light and a fountain spittoon. This station was developed around the time that the 1921 Dentists Act forced anyone practicing dentistry in the UK to register with the General Medical Council. Unqualified dentists were still allowed to work as long as they were over the age of 23, could demonstrate good character and had practised as a dentist for five of the seven preceding years.
