Description

Theologian to the Venetian republic, author of the History of the Council of Trent and other works hostile to the temporal power of the papacy. The present portrait shows the cheek wound which Sarpi sustained when an assassin attacked him in Venice in 1607, for which he was treated by Fabricius ab Acquapendente.
