About this work

Description

Cerebral malaria: histopathology This is a high power view of a section of white matter from the brain of a patient with cerebral malaria. The central capillary or venule is thrombosed (dark red-staining fibrin). The surrounding ring of myelin is necrotic and there is a mild microglial cellular reaction at the periphery. This is an older lesion with some healing (an early Dürck granuloma). The thrombosis is not the cause of the lesion, but was a secondary event after obstruction of the vessel by sticky parasitized red blood cells. H&E stain.
