    DEATHS. The rate of mortality is most satisfactory, and it is a source of pleasure to me to record year after year such small death rates. During the year the deaths of 38 persons w ere recorded, two of which were those of non-residents found drowned in the River Wharfe. This yields an annual rate of 12*0 per 1,000 persons living, a fraction less than last year from the same number of deaths. The death rate last year was 12-2, and in 1897, 8-8 per 1,000. There is no doubt that your district has become much healthier during recent years, judging by the rate of mortality, for it is always creditably low except in those years of national high rates, due to influenza, when it of necessity rises with the general average. Local conditions affecting mortality have certainly improved of late. The deaths occurred evenly throughout the year, no period having a low mortality at the expense of another.
