    Great Britain has a blind population in excess of 120,000, the most com¬ mon causes of blindness being glau¬ coma and cataract. In 1962 the British Foundation for Research into the Pre¬ vention of Blindness embarked on a six-point program, one aspect of which was to investigate the genetic causes of blindness, particularly those associated with some additional men¬ tal or physical handicap.
