Pneumococcal disease.

Each programme features a single disease and looks at attempts to develop treatments that are effective and affordable to the world's poor who make up the majority of the victims. This part features pneumococcal disease which still causes deaths in the developing countries despite being treatable by antibiotics. The infection leads to pneumonia and meningitis in children in particular. Dr Klugman in South Africa is troubled by how much resistance to antibiotics is developing across the pneumoccas - the only long-term solution to protecting children from the pneumococcal bacteria is a vaccine; but who will fund its production?
